Hunting: The Step by Step Guide to Prepare for a Hunt

We have very little time as it is, but preparing for a hunt makes it even tougher.  We just put a new Leupold scope on my rifle and of course we have to sight it in.  I am not a fan of the specific scope we are using, I would rather have the Burris Eliminator.  I am a techie person so I prefer to have something that I am familiar with.

On top of this we have to figure out which round to use for this particular hunt.  We load out own ammo so playing around with a few different "recipes" it can take a while.  All while trying to figure out where we are planning on staying or if we are going to rent a camper.

How to prepare for a hunt:

1.  Make sure your rifle and scope are zero'ed in.  The last think you want to do it get out there and take a shot to find out you not even close to your mark.  Now your chance of getting that trophy or putting food on the table has gone from great chances to slim to none.

2.  Make sure you know where you are going.  It would really suck for you to get out there and be in the wrong area.

3.  Know there area and game you are hunting.  Each area is different.  The animals will migrate differently depending on the terrane and their source of food and water.  Never assume the animals will do the same thing in different areas.

4.  Have a place setup for where you are staying or have a plan of what you are sleeping in.  The last thing you want to do is assume you have a place to stay or assume the hotels will be open.  What happens if you get there and everything is full?  That is like going on vacation and thinking you will just get a random hotel somewhere.  Not happening.  Call ahead!

We went camping one year and my husband was in charge of making sure we had a place.  He decided on a place and we drove.  I assumed he had a place already set up.  When we got there, the place was closed for the season.  We wound up driving around for the next 3 hours until we found a place.  We didn't set up camp until it was 2 a.m.

Of course there are probably other things you will need to do, but these you want to make sure you know for sure.  It really sucked getting to the campground to find out that the place was closed.  Luckily we had enough food and water no matter what happened.  Just make sure to plan ahead accordingly to your situation.
